Rumor: Fear Effect 3 may exist after all
Posted Oct 9th 2007 4:00PM by Nick Doerr
If you remember the old PlayStation One Fear Effect games, you remember a pretty decent gaming experience, laced with some edgy lesbian main characters. They were probably a few years ahead of their time, but there was planned a third Fear Effect title but it was lost in production and canned. Now, with the advent of a movie adaptation (with the tremendous talent of Uwe Boll at the head ... learn to read sarcasm!) in 2008, rumors are resurfacing of a third Fear Effect title on the current generation of consoles.
In some magazine talking about the movie, there's a quote somewhat along those lines. Eidos Interactive is bringing the series back from the grave. Still, this is no way an official announcement from Eidos, but rumors propagated by some sort of Hollywood movie magazine. We'll figure it out once Eidos tosses out an official statement, but there are bound to be some people excited by this prospect!
"We're hearing Nov. 2 (for the U.S.)," said one industry source, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Immediately after SCEE's bizarre announcement of the 40GB system in European territories, many are awaiting SCEA''s announcement of the same. The 40GB system will retail for significantly less than current PS3 models, most likely dropping down to the $399 price point. However, it will lose 2 USB ports, memory card readers, and will also lose any support for PS2 games.

Rumors ahoy: Parasite Eve and Konami and bears, oh my!
Posted Oct 6th 2007 7:15PM by Nick Doerr
It's time to get back into the business of speculation and rumors that don't consist of different PlayStation SKU's. While everyone loves talking about the convoluted and outright confusing backwards compatibility issue with the new 40GB model, we think it's better to continue pushing forward and offering some rumors that have surfaced in the latest EGM.
Konami and Hideo Kojima might be working on another PS3 exclusive, first off. We know what you're thinking, but no, supposedly the game is not the third Zone of the Enders title. We wish we had any more to say, but that's all we know. Secondly, long time fans of the amazing and amazingly under-appreciated Parasite Eve titles cried foul when it turned out a new game was being made exclusively for mobile phones. Square Enix is apparently listening to these cries and have begun work on a console version, though the consoles it will appear on is unknown. We don't see why they wouldn't continue shoving Aya onto Sony platforms -- exclusive or not. Thirdly, bears are frightening, unless qualified by a humorous story. That is all.

New PlayStation logo patented, but will it exist?
Posted Oct 3rd 2007 6:00PM by Nick Doerr
The Japanese patent office has a really neat logo in its system right now -- Sony has apparently filed for a new image to represent its console. Look at it. Doesn't it just scream "Sony ownz teh worlds1!1!!!1one!" or at the very least, "Sony goes global"? We doubt we'll see this logo at the startup of our PS3 or, in a decade, PS4 games, but if it get implemented anywhere, it's probably going to be the symbol for any new download service or be a part of some online functionality.
It could be something as miniscule as a little ball that rotates, telling you that a webpage is loading or a download is in progress. Or it could be a concept of the next controller that you implant directly into your eye -- after you remove your worthless one that actually sees. That makes perfect sense to us, but we've been wrong before. If this gets used at all, what do you think it'll be used for?
Gamestore Magazine reports that the 40GB PS3 will be available for purchase next week, October 10th, in Italy. There will be a choice of two systems: a basic 40GB for €399, or a bundle which includes two games and an extra controller for €499.
Either this is one rumor that simply refuses to die, or this is one of Sony's worst-kept secrets ever. The 40GB debacle seems to continue every day (in spite of Sony's denial of a "big bang" announcement) -- stay tuned for more.

Sony: No 'big bang' announcement on Oct. 12
Posted Oct 3rd 2007 11:00AM by Chris Powell
Filed under: Rumors
Oct. 12 is a date we've all had circled on our calendars for the past week, ever since GamePro France reported that Sony had plans for a "big bang" announcement. But now it appears that Sony has no such plans at all, according to Eurogamer.
The site contacted Sony and was told it never announced an impending announcement in the first place and has no such announcement planned. However, this could be a ploy to lower gamer's vigilance while Sony sneaks in and punches us in the gut with the $399 40GB PlayStation 3 announcement.

Rumor, continued: $399 PS3 to launch November 16th
The $399 PS3 "rumor" won't go away. And for good reason, too. The evidence clearly shows that something is going to happen ... soon. While most rumors from "industry insiders" we'll shrug off, this one from ars technica has caught our attention. Why? Well, ars technica is certainly far more reliable than some other rumor-mongering websites.
According to the report, a new $399 PS3 will be available on or before November 16th. This is part of the crucial holiday buying season, and a $399 PS3 will be far more attractive than the current $499 60GB model. In fact, some may argue it would be approximately 20% more attractive to the average consumer.
It won't be too long before we find out the truth. Stay tuned.

Rumor: Sony has 'big bang' announcement Oct. 12
Posted Sep 30th 2007 8:00PM by Chris Powell
Filed under: Rumors
GamePro France is reporting that Sony has plans for a "big bang" announcement set for Oct. 12. While rumors and speculation have been filling message boards across the internet, we feel safe to say this announcement will probably focus on the mysterious 40GB PlayStation 3.
Let's take a look at the recent events surrounding Sony's new model:
We'll, can't be happy enough for Oct. 12 to come so we can finally get some real answers, but who knows, Sony could announce a new JetMoto game, right?

40GB PS3 listed on FCC website
Posted Sep 27th 2007 8:00PM by Chris Powell
Filed under: Rumors, Hardware
The rumors of Sony's mythical 40GB PS3 have been swirling aroundalmost as fast as Lyndsay Lohan ruining her career, but until now, we haven't had any hard proof of the former. A recent Sony FCC filing suggests a new PS3 model, designated CECHG01, is coming, despite the company's recent denials.
Unlike what previous stories suggested, it looks like Wi-Fi and USB ports will remain in this new model, but there wasn't any information on the size of its hard drive, which I'm sure the ladies are just dying to know.
If Sony can keep everything inside the PS3 that makes it so great, but drop the hard drive down a bit and hit the more consumer-friendly price tag of $399, it could find that audience who has been reluctant to join the Sony Army.
Here's a thick slice of speculative pie, coming from 1UP's own rumor mill. With the surprisingly positive reactions Sony has received from reviving the classic PS One Warhawk, it's not too far off the beaten path to assume Sony would consider bringing back other classic franchises for a PS3 reimagining.
The game in question for a revival is rumored to be JetMoto. Since the original is up on the PS Store for purchase, we think there may be slight credibility to this rumor. What do you guys think? Is it possible more games from Sony's past will reappear on PS3 as some kind of fan-service, or is Warhawk going to be it for the classics?

Rumour: 40GB PS3 coming says Sky; £299 in UK says CVG
In a (not very) surprise revelation Sky, the British broadcasting supplier, has stated that they expect the fabled 40GB PS3 to be announced this week. They claim that this new model will lack several features of the 60GB/80GB such as backwards compatability (both hardware and software emulation) as well as USB ports. We're more inclined to believe that WiFi would be removed before USBs as some games will require them. Imagine if people lured into buying a new PS3 at a lower price weren't able to play games like Guitar Hero III, Rock Band or anything involving the PlayStation Eye.
The price is still rumoured to be at $399, which we've always said would make an excellent low-end price for the system. Elsewhere reports are coming in that the UK will be receiving this new SKU as well and that it will sell for £299. Though all of this information is still classified as heavily rumoured, CVG has been told by multiple sources that Sony will introduce the 40GB model in Great Britain (and, presumably, the rest of Europe) at this price, which makes it around the same price as an Xbox 360 Elite.
To cap off today's rumour-fest, Sony was touted to make these announcements at Tokyo Game Show (which didn't happen) or early this week. We'll let you know what happens.

Analysts: PS3 will overtake Xbox 360 by 2009
Posted Sep 19th 2007 11:00AM by Chris Powell
Filed under: Rumors, News
One of our favorite aspects of covering the video game industry are analyst predictions. Oftentimes, they're entirely off base, but every now and then, they get things right. Hopefully, DFC Intelligence's new report will be spot on. The company released several reports predicting the PlayStation 3 will overtake the Xbox 360 in overall console sales due to a massive surge in the gaming industry in 2009.
While the research group doesn't believe the PS3 will move ahead of the Wii in total hardware numbers, it predicts the PS3 will generate more software revenue than Nintendo's console by 2012. "We could have a situation where the Wii sells more hardware units, but by 2012 the PlayStation 3 is generating more software revenue," said David Cole, a DFC analyst.
However, this isn't the first time a research group has predicted Sony's dominance early next decade. With so many analysts coming together saying the same thing, one of them is bound to be right ... right? Let's just hope they're not all looking at the same report!

Rumor: Square to announce FF Melody XIII at TGS
Posted Sep 16th 2007 7:00AM by Chris Powell
Filed under: Rumors
With Tokyo Game Show only a few days away, the rumors have been flying at us faster than people running from the theaters after watching Dragon Wars. The latest rumor making its rounds is the possibility of Square announcing Final Fantasy Melody XIII for the PS3 at TGS.
A forum member at Ruliweb posted the above image with little-to-no information other than Square would be unveiling the title at the event. While we'd love to blindly accept this rumor, we remain skeptical since this is the same site that made fooled people last month with the fake Sega TGS lineup.
With Final Fantasy XIII still in development, would Square be developing a spin-off title concurrently? If the image is legit, it could be for the FF XIII soundtrack.

Capcom has three things to say at TGS, but what?
Posted Sep 14th 2007 4:00PM by Nick Doerr
Filed under: Rumors, News
Capcom news has been relatively subdued for a while. They didn't say much at E3, they didn't do much at Leipzig, but they're promising the Tokyo Game Show will be their big event, showing off more than that same damn Devil May Cry 4 demo. They have three large announcements, apparently, but won't even hint at any of them. Below are our guesses.
PS3 ports of Dead Rising and Lost Planet to appease angered/confused ex-Capcom fans.
Announcement of Dead Rising 2 or some other sequel ... like MegaMan Legends 3.
A new Capcom vs [insert competing company here] fighting game, in high-res 2D sprite glory.
Our guesses are just that -- guesses. If you've got any you'd like to contribute, by all means, drop a comment and let everyone judge your ideas against their own. Needless to say, we'll be on top of things when Capcom makes the official unveiling of their announcements next week.

Sony playing 'Dress'-up?
Posted Sep 11th 2007 10:20PM by Colin Torretta
Filed under: Rumors, News
Kotaku has dug up an interesting Sony Computer Entertainment trademark in the US Patent and Trademark Office's online database. According to the site, Sony has registered something called Dress (see logo on right). One of the things it was registered for (besides x-ray tubes), was the following:
PROVIDING EXHIBIT SPACE OF VIRTUAL REALITY ENVIRONMENTS IN THE INTERNET FOR COMPUTER GENERATED 3-DIMENSIONAL DESIGN OF CLOTHING
ON-LINE RETAIL STORE SERVICES FEATURING DOWNLOADABLE VIDEO GAME SOFTWARE, SOFTWARE FOR CREATING DRESS AND WEARS FOR VIRTUAL REALITY AVATARS, SOFTWARE USED FOR CREATING VIRTUAL REALITY AVATARS, AND SOFTWARE FOR COMPUTER GENERATED 3-DIMENSIONAL CLOTHING FOR AVATARS
Could this be a Home add-on of some sort? It seems like it would fit perfectly into the plans for Home and allow users to create truly unique content -- though it's just going to increase the amount of Second Life comparisons if that's the case ...
